Warning issued as North West Ambulance staff hold strike action

People have been urged to only call 999 for life-threatening emergencies as staff from ambulance services go on strike again today. A spokesperson said: “Strike action is taking place at North West Ambulance Service on January 23 and 24. We will contact you if your appointment needs to be rescheduled due to strike action. “On days where there is strike action, please only call 999 if it is a medical or mental health emergency. With more staff, ambulance response times would improve, and patient waits for treatment shorten.

Kyiv vows to continue pushing Russians out after success in Kherson

Ukraine’s president has vowed to keep pushing Russian forces out of his country after they withdrew from Kherson, leaving behind devastation, hunger and booby traps. Kherson residents hugged and kissed the arriving Ukrainian troops in rapturous scenes. As Ukrainian forces on Sunday consolidated their hold on Kherson, authorities contemplated the daunting task of clearing out explosive devices and restoring basic public services in the city. In the past two months, Ukraine’s military claimed to have retaken dozens of towns and villages north of the city of Kherson. Ukrainian foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba, though, sought to temper the excitement over the Russian retreat from Kherson.

Four arrests at Burnley vs Blackburn Rovers derby in Championship

Burnley showed their class to down Rovers 3-0, and the victory has moved the Clarets top of the table heading into the World Cup mini-break. Following the game, Lancashire Police gave an update on the operation, which continues through Sunday. "They were a 22-year-old man from Burnley and a 26-year-old man from Burnley." Liverpool loanee Tyler Morton on settling in at Blackburn Rovers

Report: Blackburn Rovers humbled by Preston North End at Ewood

A World Cup break may have come inbetween, but there was no disguising this was back-to-back derby defeats for Rovers in equally disappointing fashion as they were thumped 4-1 at home by Preston North End. Ched Evans scored twice, with Ben Woodburn and Ben Whiteman also on target for North End who were given a helping hand by some desperately poor Rovers defending. Rovers made four changes from the Turf Moor defeat which included a first start since September 3 for Bradley Dack. North End settled the quicker, and were winning the majority of second balls, despite being without five regular first-team players. Rovers were second best by a good margin, looking unsettled in and out of possession, with Preston much the hungrier.

Rishi Sunak spoke to the first ministers of Scotland and Wales on Tuesday evening in constructive talks, emphasising their “duty” to work together in order to respond to the UK’s “shared challenges”. Mr Sunak spoke to Nicola Sturgeon and Mark Drakeford following the conclusion of his cabinet reshuffle. Following the conversation, the prime minister said it was “good to speak to” Mr Drakeford and Ms Sturgeon. Mr Drakeford said he took the opportunity to congratulate Mr Sunak on his appointment as prime minister. During the summer leadership election, Ms Truss came under fire for saying she would “ignore” Ms Sturgeon.
