Soccer-Rashford fires Man United into title race, Liverpool lose again

By Peter HallMANCHESTER, England (Reuters) – Manchester United supporters are dreaming of a first Premier League title in a decade after Marcus Rashford earned a dramatic win over rivals Manchester City on Saturday, while Liverpool lost at Brighton & Hove Albion in their disappointing season. City were furious the goal was awarded after a VAR review, with Rashford initially flagged offside before letting Fernandes take the shot ahead of him. Brighton picked up their first home league victory against Liverpool since January 1961 as they climbed above their opponents into seventh. Liverpool now trail leaders Arsenal by 16 points having played one game more. The same players played outstanding football matches before but if things aren’t properly organised then it can look like that.

Porto host Atletico Madrid, currently in the Europa League spot, while the Belgians travel to Bayer Leverkusen, who are a point behind Atletico. Group EChelsea, the 2021 champions, are already through in first place ahead of their final group game with Dinamo Zagreb, whose best hope is a Europa League place. Sevilla, on five, are guaranteed a Europa League spot but as above, cannot overhaul Dortmund. The French side faces Juventus, on three points in third place and desperate to salvage a Europa League spot from their disappointing campaign.

JERUSALEM (Reuters) – On Nov. 1 Israel holds an unprecedented fifth election in less than four years with former prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu vying for a comeback. Netanyahu’s right-wing Likud party, though stagnating in the polls, is predicted to emerge as the largest in parliament. Defence Minister Benny Gantz heads the centre-right “Zionist Union” predicted to win far fewer seats than Netanyahu and Lapid’s parties. An ultranationalist lawmaker who may be Netanyahu’s kingmaker and test Israel’s foreign relations if made a minister. A high turnout may help Lapid – whose outgoing coalition included an Arab party for the fist time in Israel’s history.

United, currently managed by Erik ten Hag, are fourth in the Premier League standings on 38 points after 18 games, one point behind their local rivals Manchester City but nine adrift of leaders Arsenal. When United, like City, tried to spend big in the transfer market, most of those signings proved to be underwhelming at best, including the likes of Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku. Apart from fighting City, United are also facing competition from Saudi-backed Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur in the race to secure a top-four spot this season. A new owner will likely need to put more money into the club to fix these issues.
