U.K.’s Johnson, Sunak meet amid private battle for Tory leadership

Former Prime Minister Johnson, who returned from a Caribbean holiday earlier in the day aiming to launch an audacious political comeback just weeks after leaving office, met ex-Finance Minister Sunak to discuss the race, the BBC and others reported. Mr. Johnson cut short a luxury stay in the Dominican Republic to join the seemingly three-way tussle, with allies saying he was “up for it”. “We must move on,” he urged the Tories, adding they “must get behind a capable leader who can deliver a Conservative programme” who he identified as ex-Finance Minister Sunak. Tory MP James Duddridge, a key Johnson ally who confirmed Friday the ex-leader was intent on standing, said on Saturday that he had now secured the support of 100 colleagues. Mr. Johnson has nonetheless been endorsed by several Tory heavyweights, including on Saturday ex-Interior Minister Priti Patel.

At the Expo, India and U.K. announced a new defence industry joint working group to strengthen defence collaboration which also held its first meeting. “What the U.K. brings is high levels of expertise and technology in everything from missiles to engines. So, what I’d also like to see is not only British companies tying up with Indian companies but also looking at how they can export,” Mr. Ellis said in a brief conversation with The Hindu at DefExpo. And we’ve also seen the effectiveness of Ukrainian response with support from the U.K. and other countries. “And the future, frankly, is a tougher one, both in the Indo-Pacific and also in the European theatre and we can actually gain strength from being together,” Mr. Ellis said.

Delhi L-G launches one-time property tax amnesty scheme 'SAMRIDDHI 2022-23'

Coercive measures to collect the tax dues shall be launched against such defaulters from April 1 next yearLt. Under the scheme, residential property owners can pay just the principal property tax amount of the current and of the past five years. Mr. Saxena added that this new amnesty scheme will also widen the tax base and enable MCD to build a proper tax database by being more pragmatic about the enforcement of its long-pending tax dues. Coercive measures to collect the tax dues shall be launched against such defaulters from April 1 next year, the statement said. Such cases where principal, interest and penalty have already been paid before the launch of the scheme, shall not be reassessed and reopened, the statement added.
