University of Georgia football player Devin Willock and staff member Chandler LeCroy both died in the crash. The type of injuries is redacted in the report released Tuesday, which said she was not wearing a seat belt. The front seat passenger, identified as 21-year-old Warren McClendon, sustained a laceration to his head during the crash, the report says. According to the report alcohol and drug tests were not administered to the driver at the crash site. He was good, very good student, very good person.”It’s an unfortunately familiar tragedy for the family.

An ‘unprecedented’ rise in respiratory viruses in children is overwhelming some hospitals

(CNN) — A surge in respiratory illnesses among children is beginning to put a strain on hospitals. In particular, hospitals are seeing a rise in cases of respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV, a common cold virus that can be associated with severe disease in young children and older adults. Surveillance data collected by the CDC clearly shows a rise in RSV cases nationwide in recent weeks, with cases detected by PCR tests more than tripling over the past two months and nearing last year’s peaks. October has been like never before for this virus,” Monica M. Buchanan, senior director of strategic and enterprise communications for Connecticut Children’s Hospital, told CNN. This shift comes as other respiratory viruses — the coronavirus that causes Covid-19, rhinoviruses, enteroviruses and flu — drive more concern, too.

(CNN) — Two high profile athletes are leaving Kanye West’s sports agency, Donda Sports, in the wake of the artist and businessman’s repeated antisemitic statements. Aaron Donald, a star football player on the Los Angeles Rams, announced Tuesday that he is leaving the agency. On Monday, Brown told the Boston Globe that he planned to stick with the agency. “A lot of people that I work with, work with their families, build love and respect for, spending time in the summer. The Anti-Defamation League categorizes the phrase as a “hate slogan” used by White supremacist groups, including the Ku Klux Klan.

Report: housing affordability problems in Massachusetts worsening

More families are growing burdened by housing costs, exacerbating inequality and stymying efforts to close racial wealth and homeownership gaps, the report found. Researchers found that many subsidized units sit vacant and unused, stemming from a lack of consistent listing and application processes. Boston University political science professor Katherine Levine Einstein called on state government to ramp up centralized management and monitoring of subsidized housing and do more to enforce fair housing regulations. “The state is failing to collect valuable systematic information about subsidized housing,” Einstein said. “This makes it harder for homeseekers to access that subsidized housing, and it also makes it all but impossible for us to effectively evaluate what policies work and what policies don’t.”(Copyright (c) 2022 State House News Service.

Then come January 1, 2023, a similar law goes into effect in California for employers with at least 15 employees. Open questions and workaroundsWhile the New York City and California laws are going to increase pay transparency, they also are raising many compliance questions for employers. Employers set pay based on many factors like competition for labor in a given locale as well as legal requirements. Under the New York City law, for instance, employers don’t have to disclose pay ranges if they don’t advertise the job in writing.

Garland appoints special counsel to investigate Biden docs

WASHINGTON (AP) — Attorney General Merrick Garland on Thursday appointed a special counsel to investigate the presence of documents with classified markings found at President Joe Biden’s home in Wilmington, Delaware, and at an office in Washington. Biden told reporters at the White House that he was “cooperating fully and completely” with a Justice Department investigation into how classified information and government records were stored. He did not say when the latest series of documents were found, only that his lawyers’ review of potential storage locations was completed Wednesday night. Richard Sauber, a special counsel to the president, said that after Biden’s personal lawyers found the initial documents, they examined other locations where records might have been shipped after Biden left the vice presidency in 2017. Biden said the Department of Justice was “immediately notified” after the documents were located and that department lawyers took custody of the records.

Hurricane Roslyn makes landfall in Mexico

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Hurricane Roslyn slammed into a sparsely populated stretch of Mexico’s Pacific coast between the resorts of Puerto Vallarta and Mazatlan Sunday morning, then declined to tropical storm force and quickly moved inland. The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Roslyn was about 60 miles (95 kilometers) east-southeast of the northern city of Torreon. While it missed a direct hit, Roslyn brought heavy rain and high waves to Puerto Vallarta, where ocean surges lashed the beachside promenade. Roslyn came ashore in Nayarit state, in roughly the same area where Hurricane Orlene made landfall Oct. 3. The hurricane made landfall around the village of Santa Cruz, near the fishing village of San Blas, about 90 miles (150 kilometers) north of Puerto Vallarta.

Trump company set for criminal trial in off-books pay scheme

If convicted, the Trump Organization could be fined more than $1 million — but that’s not the only potential fallout. The former Trump Organization chief financial officer must also pay nearly $2 million in taxes, penalties and interest and complete five years of probation. In pleading guilty, Weisselberg pinned blame for the scheme on himself and other top Trump Organization executives, including senior vice president and controller, Jeffrey McConney. “The purpose of the scheme was to compensate Weisselberg and other Trump Organization executives in a manner that was ‘off the books,’” the indictment said. Last month, New York Attorney General Letitia James filed a civil lawsuit accusing Trump and the Trump Organization of misleading banks and others for years about the value of his assets.
