Man will spend his life in prison

Listen to this reportBy Linda CicoiraAn Exmore man will spend the rest of his life in prison for killing his mother and a family friend at a party in Deep Creek last year and shooting at his sister, who managed to get away. Thirty-four-year-old Fredrick (Ricky) Marvin Barnes Jr. will serve 69 years in prison, making him more than 100 when he is released, if he lives that long. Judge W. Revell Lewis III, of Accomack Circuit Court, sentenced Barnes to a total of 94 years. The judge wondered how the defendant was “even standing up.” Lewis said shooting his mother in the head was “unimaginable. Then Barnes’ mother was killed.

Weekend rainfall warnings 'likely' as atmospheric river drenches B.C. coast

Expect heavy rain and some gusty winds, but nothing like last November, says Environment Canada. Environment Canada issued a special weather statement Friday morning as an atmospheric river is expected to bring “heavy rainfall and strong winds” to British Columbia’s south coast and Vancouver Island over the weekend. “The heaviest hit areas are looking to be the west coast of Vancouver Island, Howe Sound and North Vancouver,” said Environment Canada meteorologist Alyssa Charbonneau. Public Safety Minister Mike Farnworth later confirmed representatives with Environment Canada told him the system would be ready by early January 2022. Like any extreme weather event, experts recommend paying close attention to Environment Canada weather alerts, to carry an emergency kit in the car and avoid unnecessary travel.
