NASA will provide live coverage on NASA Television, the agencys website , and the NASA app . Live coverage as Mission Control, Houston, monitors the spacecrafts entry, descent, and splashdown off the coast of San Diego will begin at 11 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 11. Following the lunar flyby Dec. 5, NASA will host a 5 p.m. news conference at Johnson. Participants will include:Mike Sarafin, Artemis mission manager, NASA HeadquartersJudd Frieling, flight director, JohnsonHoward Hu, manager, Orion Program, NASA JohnsonMelissa Jones, landing and recovery director, NASA KennedyA news conference also will be held after splashdown, about 3:30 p.m. Dec. 11.

Despite the fires, EV advocates remain confident in the technology and optimistic about the transition to electric transportation.

Interior threatens Colorado River cuts

After Western states failed to come up with a plan to cut their use of Colorado River water, the Interior Department on Friday said it is preparing to take steps to control the flow and keep hydropower dams generating electricity. They argue this contrasts with the Lower Basin states —California, Arizona and Nevada — which can draw from downstream reservoirs (Greenwire, July 20). But Arizona water managers, who did not offer specifics about the proposal, said in August that it had been rejected. California, which claims the largest portion of Colorado River water, would not face any cuts unless Lake Mead falls to an elevation of 1,045, about 2 feet less than the predicted 1,047.61-foot level it will reach in January 2023. It remains to be see if Interior could back off its plans should Western states reach an agreement before the draft SEIS is released in 2023.

Court NEPA fight over Black school may shape energy projects

The Biden administration has argued that litigation over the Trump rule should be dismissed now that CEQ is working on completing its own revisions. The agency noted that the groups can still file challenges against individual projects that are approved under the Trump rules. The lower court could reach a ruling on the substance of the environmental groups’ arguments fairly quickly, said Meyer. Pine Grove Road, which leads to the school, would be destroyed and moved under the developer’s proposal, said Jaffe. That factor could not be considered under the Trump NEPA rule.

Huge EV-station battery opens in Calif. desert

Electrify America, a charging-network operator, has attached a giant battery to its electric vehicle charging station in a tiny desert town between Los Angeles and Las Vegas. As more EVs travel the highway, remote charging stations are getting more use. This combination — a greater number of EVs and more powerful chargers — can cause two problems for the charging station operator. Electrify America is a network stood up by German automaker Volkswagen AG as a penalty for its Dieselgate scandal in 2015. In June, Electrify America took a step beyond being mere punishment when it raised $450 million to expand operations.

Majority of disabled people never go home after disasters

Advocates have been trying for years to draw attention to the harsh conditions that people with disabilities face after natural disasters. The information marks the first time the Census Bureau has analyzed how disasters affect groups of people. The Census data also confirm that disasters generally have a harsher effect on disadvantaged groups including low-income households and people who are racial or ethnic minorities. But the new Census data makes clear that institutionalization is the norm for people with disabilities — along with other problems. In December, the bureau added questions about disasters for people who were forced to evacuate and their hardships.

4 questions answered about Biden’s oil strategy

Moves by Saudi Arabia and its allies to cut back oil production also pushed fuel prices to record levels this year (Climatewire, Oct. 20). At the time, U.S. oil production was falling, the country was dependent on the Middle East for oil imports, and consumers had just gotten over a series of fuel shortages brought on by OPEC’s oil embargoes. “You can increase oil and gas production now while still moving full speed ahead to accelerate our transition to clean energy,” Biden said. In response to a report this year from Rep. Bill Pascrell (D-N.J.), oil and gas companies said they don’t individually control crude oil prices (E&E News PM, Aug. 24). Shortly before Biden’s remarks Wednesday, the head of the Independent Petroleum Association of America called on the White House to recognize the importance of domestic oil and gas production.
