For a secure and peaceful Southeast Asia, Malaysia needs to have a robust and independent foreign policy and should see itself as an aspiring middle power in the context of great power rivalry. Malaysia should see itself as an aspiring middle power. There are multiple definitions of what constitutes a middle power and I do not intend to dwell on them. The key is to be strategic and proactive in Malaysia’s conduct of foreign policy and diplomacy. We must realise that Malaysia’s economic fate and our people’s well-being require a robust yet balanced foreign policy.

Almost 70,000 personnel ready for deployment to tackle floods, says Ismail Sabri

“PDRM and other agencies under the Home Ministry (KDN) like Rela, APM and MAF are ready (to be mobilised) for floods,” he said. He said the number of personnel would be increased according to the situation if floods strike on an unusually massive scale throughout the country. Meanwhile, on preparations to set up evacuation centres (PPS), Ismail Sabri said the government had identified 2,010 of the 6,010 PPS throughout the country, which could also be used as voting centres. He said these PPS would be segregated into evacuation and voting centres if flooding occurs on GE15 polling day on Nov 19. Ismail Sabri said district officers have been empowered to identify places to be used as flood relief centres, and alternative plans could be implemented if necessary.

Stocks creep higher as inflation data offers hope ahead of Fed

But jitters in other assets showed the path ahead will be far from smooth as policymakers grapple with trying to increase rates to curb inflation without stifling the economic recovery. The US central bank said last month when it raised interest rates by 50 basis points that the terminal rates may need to remain higher for longer to fight inflation. Markets however are pricing in rate cuts for late 2023, with fed fund futures implying a range of 4.25% to 4.5% by December. The yield on 10-year Treasury notes fell to 3.6958%, and two-year Treasury yields, which typically move in step with interest rate expectations, slipped six basis points. Oil prices slid further however as concerns about weak global demand and the possibility of further US interest rate increases outweighed any optimism about the benefits of China's policy change.

UniCredit boosts targets a second straight quarter on rates

MILAN (Oct 26): UniCredit SpA has raised full-year revenue and profit targets for a second straight quarter, joining European peers in posting better-than-expected results on rising interest rates. Key performance metrics for the three months through September — including net income and revenue — were all better than expected. Third-quarter net income at UniCredit was €1.71 billion, compared with the €1.08 billion estimated by analysts. Higher revenue, lower loan-loss provisions, and the Russia subsidiary boosted results. "We see upside to net interest income and believe UniCredit can deliver about €14.5b out of the planned capital return."
