In Zimbabwe, according to the Education Act (Chapter 25:04), primary education for every child of school-going age is compulsory. Rishi Sunak rewards loyalists and demotes Liz Truss allies in ministerial shake-up

Rishi Sunak has demoted allies of Liz Truss and rewarded his own supporters as he ploughed on with a ministerial shake-up drawing on all factions of the embattled Tory party. Downing Street was refusing to commit to key pledges on the triple lock on state pensions and increasing defence spending to 3% of GDP by 2030 as Mr Sunak and Mr Hunt complete their review. Letters: Violence and intimidation: Zimbos’ fate ahead of the 2023 elections

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec) had scheduled the by-elections for October 22, 2022 to fill vacancies arising in Buhera RDC Ward 24; Guruve RDC Ward 4; Insiza RDC Ward 4; Matobo RDC Ward 2; Takawira (RDC) Ward 6 and Mutare Municipality Ward 18, following the death of incumbent councillors in those respective areas. The ERC notes that the by-election sites were marred by pre-election violence and intimidation which extended to the election day. The ERC notes that unless electoral reforms are implemented, the 2023 Harmonised elections will result in yet another disputed election, marred by violence. To the Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission:To fully investigate the violence targeting Honourable Jasmine Toffa ahead of the 22 October . While enforced disappearances are pervasive throughout the African continent, the existing data does not reflect the full scale of the problem.

Elon Musk takes control of Twitter, ousts notorious top executives

Elon Musk has taken control of Twitter and ousted the CEO, chief financial officer and the company’s top lawyer, two people familiar with the deal said Thursday night. But they said Musk is in charge of the social media platform and has fired CEO Parag Agrawal, CFO Ned Segal and Chief Legal Counsel Vijaya Gadde. Musk said Twitter should be “warm and welcoming to all” and enable users to choose the experience they want to have. Musk is expected to speak to Twitter employees directly Friday if the deal is finalized, according to an internal memo cited in several media outlets. But he has shared few concrete details about his plans for the social media platform.

THE world could be facing the longest recession it has seen since the Global Financial Crisis over a decade ago, according to Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk. A key element factoring into investor calculations is the cost of money, which is set by policymakers at the world’s central banks. “Recessions do have a silver lining in that companies that shouldn’t exist stop existing,” wrote Musk. Elon Musk himself recently expressed his disdain for the Fed, agreeing with Wharton finance professor Jeremy Siegel, who blasted Fed policymakers for making the biggest mistake in the institution’s 110-year history. The CEO admitted back at the height of the stock market bubble that Tesla was “about a month” away from bankruptcy.

Brighton smash Chelsea 4-1, as Man City goes top

Brighton beat Chelsea 4-1 in the English Premier League on Saturday to hand Potter his first loss since leaving the south-coast club to take over the Blues in September. After a strong start under Potter, Chelsea has dropped points in three straight league games following draws against Brentford and Manchester United. Kai Havertz pulled one back for Chelsea early in the second half but Pascal Gross finished off the scoring in injury time for the hosts. “The atmosphere was really intense here, and we didn’t necessarily match that level of intensity from the start,” Potter said. Newcastle consolidated fourth place, two points behind Tottenham and three points ahead of Chelsea.

Seamless flow of Beitbridge traffic despite surge in volumes

Figures from the Department of Immigration show that an average of 20 000 travellers are being processed at the country and South Africa’s only land border daily. A total of 200 buses and 2 000 light vehicles are passing through the border compared to the usual 100 buses and 1100 cars daily. The acting head of immigration, Mr Trustworthy Manatsire said although they were clearing huge volumes of traffic, the pressure was minimal because of the new traffic flow system. “We have all deployed more manpower and opened up more services points so that the flow of traffic remains seamless. It is understood that the separation of traffic into commercial, buses and light vehicles and passengers’ terminals had made the clearance of seasonal traffic seamless.

Newcastle beats declining Tottenham 2-1, into fourth place in EPL

LONDON (AP) — First-half goals from Callum Wilson and Miguel Almiron sent Newcastle into the Premier League’s top four with a superb 2-1 win at Tottenham on Sunday. Spurs should have broken the deadlock not long after when Kane sent Son through, but he hesitated and his weak chip was saved by Nick Pope from close range. It appeared Spurs were edging closer to the opener when they were undone by Lloris’ error in the 31st minute. Wilson carried on while Lloris was on the ground and lobbed both the France international and Dier before he wheeled away to celebrate. Perisic sent a curler straight down at Pope and Dan Burn impressively blocked a close-range effort from Son as Tottenham fell to a first home defeat since April.
