Well, here we are — a little more than halfway through the season and Hughes has played in all 47 of the Devils’ games. Subban, Hughes’ former teammate, is banging that drum hard, and he’s alleging that nobody wants to talk about Hughes’ case for the Hart. First, let’s state the obvious — any MVP conversation that doesn’t immediately start with Connor McDavid is erroneous. On a team that ranks sixth in offense this season, Hughes is nine goals and 12 points clear of the next-most productive players on the Devils roster. So is it time to start campaigning for Hughes as MVP?

Second-half surge helps Bucks top Nets, 110-99

Antetokounmpo scored 34 points in the second half as the Bucks outscored the Nets 67-44 over the final two periods. Nash was ejected for the first time as Nets coach since taking over at the start of the 2020-21 season. The Bucks outscored the Nets 44-29 the rest of the way. Milwaukee’s Jordan Nwora sank a tiebreaking 3-pointer from in front of the Nets’ bench with 9:43 left. Bucks: The Bucks continue to play without Khris Middleton (wrist), Pat Connaughton (calf) and Joe Ingles (knee).

Wolves bounce back with 134-122 win over Spurs

MINNEAPOLIS — Anthony Edwards scored 34 points, and reserve guard Jaylen Nowell added 23 points for the Minnesota Timberwolves in a 134-122 win over the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday night. Karl-Anthony Towns added 21 points for Minnesota, which bounced back after a 115-106 loss to San Antonio at home Monday. Minnesota led by as many as 17, but San Antonio made another third-quarter push, as it did in Monday’s win. The Spurs scored 41 points in the quarter, led by Johnson’s 13, and had closed within 80-75 at one point. “We weren’t solid and sharp in the first half and they took advantage of it,” San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said.

Vikings' Peterson continues to defy age

Patrick Peterson, Vikings cornerback (⬆ UP)Remember when there were people who saying Peterson was washed up … two years ago? Peterson sealed Minnesota’s win over Buffalo this past Sunday with an interception, his second of the game. Peterson was the first to do it in a road game in almost exactly seven years, when the Vikings’ Terence Newman did it at Oakland on Nov. 15, 2015. Justin Jefferson, Vikings wide receiver (⬆ UP)We’ve not only run out of superlatives for Jefferson but are continually amazed with the things he does on the field. Against Buffalo, Jefferson had 10 catches for a career-high 193 yards and a touchdown.

Prescott, Cowboys survive Eagles, backup QB Minshew, 40-34

(AP) — Joe Burrow threw three touchdown passes and Cincinnati forced a late turnover in the red zone to preserve its win over New England. CeeDee Lamb's second TD catch made it 34-34 with 5:49 left in the game. He has thrown two TD passes in four straight games for the 49ers (11-4) and has won all three of his starts. Taylor Heinicke threw two TD passes for Washington (7-7-1) but also lost a fumble and threw an interception in the fourth quarter. Wentz, playing for the first time since Week 6, threw a 20-yard TD pass to Curtis Samuel.

Steelers star LB T.J. Watt nearing a return from pec injury

PITTSBURGH (AP) — T.J. Watt is watching from the sideline in sweatpants and wearing a headset, trying to keep track of a Pittsburgh Steelers defense that desperately misses his menace and production. "I feel encouraged about where I'm at right now," said Watt, who returned to practice on Wednesday. Fortunately for Watt, an injury that can sometimes be season-ending proved to be only season-altering. In Cincinnati, Watt appeared ready to pick up right where he left off in 2021 when he tied an NFL record by collecting 22 1/2 sacks. It's more likely the Steelers wait until after next week's bye to turn Watt loose.

Cardinals utility player Brendan Donovan was also named a finalist for NL Rookie of the Year as the BBWAA revealed finalists for a host of annual awards on Monday night. Aaron Judge, Shohei Ohtani and Yordan Alvarez remain contenders for AL MVP. Peña, who won a Gold Glove last week, was the World Series MVP against Philadelphia and the AL Championship Series MVP versus the Yankees. He became the first hitter to take those three prizes in an entire career, according to OptaSTATS — doing it all in his rookie season. Atlanta Braves center fielder Michael Harris II and pitcher Spencer Strider joined Donovan in the top three for NL Rookie of the Year.
