Advocacy group wants to address overcrowded animal shelters

Concern about overcrowding at the San Jose Animal Care Center spurred a group of local residents to start an advocacy group called Sustain Our Shelters. San Jose’s Animal Care Center on Monterey Road has provided shelter and field services for San Jose, Cupertino, Los Gatos, Milpitas and Saratoga residents since 2004. “We have over 100 dogs waiting for spay/neuter surgery,” said Erin Cizan, senior public information representative for animal services. Now active on various social media platforms, Sustain Our Shelters got its start with a post on Next Door from members concerned about reduced services at the San Jose shelter, according to Davis-Matthews. They are also short of vet techs.”The San Jose Animal Care Center has one full-time medical director and two part-time veterinarians, according to Kiska Icard, division manager of animal services.

Blacy’s jewelers celebrates 20th anniversary in Old Town

Los Gatos resident Jeanette Blacy, a third-generation jeweler and certified gemologist, is celebrating 20 years of doing business in Old Town. My parents moved to Los Gatos in 1960, and my mom managed a jewelry store in Cupertino. I’ve been in the biz ever since; I suppose you could say it’s in my DNA.”Growing up in Los Gatos, Blacy and her twin sister Janet had relatives in Placerville who they loved to visit. We would make jewelry and sell it to the hippie jeweler in Old Town. We would sell the pieces for $5 or $10 and then go to the Wine Cellar to drink coke and eat French bread.

49ers report card: Chiefs pull away against eroding defense

George Kittle’s fourth-quarter touchdown catch highlighted his six-catch, 98-yard effort – the same catch totals, minus the touchdown, by the Chiefs’ Travis Kelce on National Tight Ends Day. PASS DEFENSE: FPatrick Mahomes passed for 423 yards and three touchdowns, which was surprising only that it came against a defense that allowed only four touchdown passes all season. The 49ers couldn’t get to Mahomes, with Bosa often drawing double-team blocks except on his fourth-quarter sack. RUN DEFENSE: FThis is not a great trend, not after how the Falcons bullied them and the Chiefs raced past them. This game brought three touchdown runs allowed by a defense that yielded only four all season.

Jill On Money: Seniors get raises; others not so lucky

There was one bit of good news from the report: Social Security recipients will be getting a BIG raise next year. On average, Social Security benefits will increase by more than $140 per month next year. Real average hourly earnings (earnings adjusted for inflation) for all employees decreased 3%, seasonally adjusted, from September 2021 to September 2022. Conversely, there are many workers who will see more of their pay subject to the 6.2% Social Security tax. The income is subject to the tax changes each year, matching changes in the national average wage index (also referred to as “the contribution and benefit base”).

Jets RB Breece Hall and OL Alijah Vera-Tucker both out for the season

Jets coach Robert Saleh announced Monday that running back Breece Hall would miss the rest of the 2022 season due to an ACL tear and a minor meniscus tear. He also announced offensive lineman Alijah Vera-Tucker would miss the rest of the year after tearing his biceps as he will undergo surgery to repair the injury. We experienced this back in 2020 back in San Francisco and lost a handful of guys for the season. Saleh doesn’t expect Fant, who is scheduled to come off injured reserve this week, to be ready to game action.

Details: 3 stars; available now on Hulu. “Raymond & Ray”: Too many eccentricities drown out the emotion in writer/director Rodrigo Garcia’s dysfunctional family dramedy, which tells a tale of “boys being boys,” even when they’re middle-aged. “Raymond & Ray” does have its moments, but it seems obsessed with trying to be different when it’s basically just warming up leftovers. In a first, GOP's Cheney endorses a democrat for office

Cheney and Slotkin serve on the House Armed Services Committee, but their shared background in the federal government goes back further. Cheney worked in the State Department before launching her political career, as did Slotkin, who worked in the CIA and the Defense Department as well. Cheney is vice chair of the House Jan. 6 committee, which recently issued a subpoena for Trump to testify. “I have come to know Elissa as a good and honorable public servant,” Cheney said in a statement included in the Slotkin campaign’s announcement. The AP-NORC poll also found a large segment of Republicans, 58%, still believe Democrat Joe Biden’s presidential election wasn’t legitimate.

Review: 'Wendell & Wild' is a dark, cold journey

Director Henry Selick’s return to stop-motion animation is icy, from the slushy potholes on the roads to the vapor clouds that emerge from characters’ mouths. His script with Jordan Peele is equally chilly, a place where alienation, backstabbing and plots abound. Unfortunately, their banter is a little hemmed in, a little less hysterical than anticipated. For all the lovingly crafted spectacle, Selick’s agonizing, shot-by-shot film, is as overstuffed as that bear. “Wendell & Wild”2 stars out of 4Rating: PG-13 (for some thematic material, violence, substance use and brief strong language)Running time: 106 minutes
