Security forces in Iran have reportedly started shooting at mourners who gathered at a cemetery. Demonstrators made their way to the grave in the city of Saqez in Kurdistan province on foot, after Iranian security forces blocked the routes leading to the city. The semi-official ISNA news agency characterised the crackdown as clashes between security forces and protesters, adding that the internet had been cut. Activists said on social media that protests around Tehran's medical school on Wednesday turned violent, when security forces used tear gas to disperse protesters. At least 141 demonstrators have been killed in the protests gripping Iran since Amini's death on September 16, as per local rights groups.

Meanwhile, the Kremlin said Russia's nuclear deterrence forces had launched test missiles. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in an evening video address on Wednesday that Ukrainian forces had been holding out against Russian attacks, especially in parts of Donbas. 'Iran will be democratic one day': Shirin Ebadi – DW – 10

DW spoke to Iranian Nobel Peace Prize laureate and human rights activist Shirin Ebadi, as she received an award at the Human Rights Film Festival Berlin. To show solidarity with Iranian protesters, the Human Rights Film Festival has bestowed its Honorary Award for Freedom and Democracy to 2003 Nobel Peace Prize laureate and Iranian human rights activist, Shirin Ebadi. Her work has allowed "the principle of human rights in Iran to remain in the consciousness of the people," she added. The human rights advocacy group also estimates that at least 12,500 people have been detained since the beginning of the protests. "Shirin Ebadi: Until We Are Free," a new documentary based on the Nobel Prize laureate's 2016 memoirs, also celebrated its German premiere at the Human Rights Film Festival.

The French President knows that and so does the German Chancellor. President Macron sees a threat to his concept of European sovereignty or independence. President Macron and Chancellor Scholz now have to redefine and communicate the common Franco-German denominator and then stick to it. The German chancellor would be well advised to show a little more enthusiasm for French visions of Europe. The French president in turn has to show more understanding for the pragmatic German attempt at fighting inflation and recession.
