The answer is that they were all born between 1965 and 1980, making them Generation Xers, and they have all turned Britain barking mad. I say this with a heavy heart, for to my eternal shame I also belong to Generation X. You won’t need me to tell you that the directors of all three belong to Generation X. Perhaps that is why a disproportionately high number of people gluing themselves to motorways in 2022 hail from Generation X. They are characterised by inanity not ideology, and above all by the fact that most come from Generation X.

At a recent dinner, an MP told me a story that reveals a great deal about the current state of feminism. So her plea to her MP was this: help me to protect my children, tell me what to say. Feminism in the second half of the 20th century was strongly associated with the left, since it grew out of the American civil rights movements of the 1960s. There have been plenty of periods during which feminism of a much more conservative flavour has dominated. The trans movement sprang from the internet, and its opposing movement sprang from the same.

Soaring inflation means that pretty much everyone – public sector, private sector, and especially those on fixed incomes – has suffered a ‘real terms pay cut’. This hasn’t stopped individual unions presenting their claims in the current strike season as though the public sector, and their particular bit of it, is uniquely affected. As for the supposed ‘real terms’ fall in teachers’ pay since 2010, all sides pick and choose their time scales to bolster their case. A teachers’ strike does not just close the schools, it has knock-on effects on the whole economy. If lecturers, like teachers, claim they work dawn to dusk all year, how about an 18-day strike in the long summer vacation?

On 5 September, Rishi Sunak lost the Tory leadership race to Liz Truss with 43 per cent of the vote. Sunak’s defeat in the summer’s Tory leadership contest was the first serious setback in his political career. Sunak’s politeness – and the easy life available to someone of his means – is too often confused with a lack of toughness. He returned to business as a backbench MP, speaking in a Commons debate the day after Truss became prime minister. Perhaps the biggest risk for the Tories remains the state of the NHS, where the winter crisis has started early.

Harry (who is the political editor of the Sun) and I signed the deal for Out of the Blue: The Astonishing Rise of Liz Truss on 20 August, so we had less than two months to throw ourselves into the madcap world of Truss. We had a ringside seat as the bullish optimism of team Truss we had witnessed over the summer turned to despair. Screenshots of the book with multiple 99p discount stickers photoshopped on top of the cover were shared thousands of times. What was originally ‘The astonishing rise of Liz Truss’ was euphemistically changed to ‘The explosive rise of Liz Truss’ before eventually settling on ‘The unexpected rise and rapid fall of Liz Truss’. Initially, we thought the book would end on that infamous party conference – Truss taking to the stage as her critics circled around her.

Money is rotting

(EU rates eventually going negative, meaning you paid banks to keep your money, was even weirder.) Combined with rampant money-printing, zero interest rates were a short-term expedient that made the big picture still worse. Over time, as money continues to be free and central banks keep magicking up trillions from thin air, money becomes disconnected from value – real products and services. Right now, money throughout the world is rotting. We only have a ‘strong dollar’ because, given slightly-higher-than-farcical US interest rates, investors in greenbacks can slow the rot a tad.

Does Westminster even care about the Union?

The Supreme Court will hand down its judgment in the Scottish independence referendum case next Wednesday. This is the reference brought by the Lord Advocate, Scotland’s most senior law officer, over Nicola Sturgeon’s proposed Scottish Independence Referendum Bill. Going to the Supreme Court is a political move, and presumably reflects Sturgeon’s suspicion that Holyrood holding a referendum in defiance of Westminster is unlawful. In fact, I would go as far as to say Nicola Sturgeon won the moment the reference went to the Supreme Court. It was certainly not set up in order to make it easier for the SNP to dismantle the United Kingdom.

Is Whitehall at last baring its teeth in response to the Scottish government and SNP’s separatism push? A look into how the Scottish civil service conducts itself is long overdue. However, in keeping with the histrionics unleashed following last week’s ruling, this has been portrayed by nationalists as another provocation towards ‘Scottish democracy’. What she and others are likely to find on Calton Hill is an institutional culture where government and party are almost indistinguishable. Reports suggest that the UK government wants to take a softly, softly approach to Scotland off the back of last week’s Supreme Court decision – while watching the nationalist coalition rip itself apart.
