PTINew York, January 20Google will lay off 12,000 jobs across the globe, its CEO Sundar Pichai announced on Friday, becoming the latest tech giant after Microsoft, Facebook and Amazon to retrench staff en mass amid the global economic downturn. Pichai said the layoffs at Google were carried out after a “rigorous review" of its operations. Amazon is also cutting 18,000 jobs and Facebook parent Meta is trimming 11,000 positions. Pivoting the company to be AI-first years ago led to groundbreaking advances across our businesses and the whole industry,” he said. St. Louis, October 22A federal appeals court has issued an administrative stay temporarily blocking President Joe Biden’s plan to cancel billions of dollars in federal student loans. The plan, announced in August, would cancel USD 10,000 in student loan debt for those making less than USD 125,000 or households with less than USD 250,000 in income. The cancellation applies to federal student loans used to attend undergraduate and graduate school, along with Parent Plus loans. The Justice Department says the law allows Biden to reduce or erase student loan debt during a national emergency. He said student loan defaults have skyrocketed over the past 2 ½ years.
