(Photo: AFP)The world's oldest known person, French nun Lucile Randon, has died aged 118, a spokesman told AFP on Tuesday. Randon, known as Sister Andre, was born in southern France on February 11, 1904, when World War I was still a decade away. It is likely that France's new oldest person is now 112-year-old Marie-Rose Tessier, a woman from Vendee, longevity expert Laurent Toussaint told AFP. But Toussaint warned that it was always possible an even older person had not yet made themselves known. Jeanne Calment, who died in 1997 in Arles, southern France, at the age of 122 holds the record for the oldest confirmed age reached by any human.

Iran protest deaths mount as Tehran vows 'severe response'

"Iran's security forces killed at least eight people since last night as they again opened fire on mourners and protesters" in at least four provinces, Amnesty said, condemning the "reckless and unlawful use of firearms". Raisi vowed "a severe response" over the mass killing at the Shah Cheragh mausoleum following evening prayers. The protests sparked by Amini's death have been led by young women who have burned their headscarves and confronted security forces. Elsewhere in the city, a video posted on the Iran Wire news website showed crowds setting fire to the governor's office. Oslo-based group Iran Human Rights says the security forces' crackdown on the Amini protests has cost the lives of at least 141 demonstrators, including at least 29 children.

At age 95, Pope Benedict "had been with us for quite a while," Cardinal Dolan said. Cardinal Dolan asked all archdiocesan parishes to designate one of their weekend Masses to be celebrated in memory of Pope Benedict. Cardinal Dolan began his homily by noting that New Year's is traditionally a time when everyone reviews the past year. "She is a great example of a faithful follower of Jesus, a disciple, not only his mother," Cardinal Dolan said.

Ukrainian deminers complete training in Cambodia

Between 4 million and 6 million landmines and other munitions were left across Cambodia which caused 64,950 casualties, including 19,806 deaths between January 1979 and July 2021. The technical training course for the Ukrainian army shares Cambodia's successes in dealing with mines, Ratana added in the statement. Cambodian deminers initially learned their skills from United Nations peacekeepers. Later, they introduced their own initiatives, including advanced training for dogs and rats, to sniff out and locate landmines and ERW.
