It was a mad dash to the end, but the stage has finally been set for the Big Bash finals series, with the final five teams all locked in. The Perth Scorchers (1), Sydney Sixers (2), Melbourne Renegades (3), Sydney Thunder (4), and the Brisbane Heat (5) have all qualified and are ready to battle it out for BBL glory. Basically, our first match is 4 v 5 called ‘The Eliminator’, with the winner to play 3 in ‘The Knockout’. 1 v 2 face off in ‘The Qualifier’ with the winner heading straight to the GF and also claiming hosting rights. #BBL12 pic.twitter.com/TCSgxvlosv — KFC Big Bash League (@BBL) January 25, 2023Returning allrounder Jason Sangha believes the Sydney Thunder can cause some trouble in the BBL finals after sneaking into the top-five.

Thousands of games worth of NRL experience is heading out the door in 2022 with several big names bringing down the curtain on their careers. “Josh has long been at the heart of the Bulldogs,” said Bulldogs chairman John Khoury. The former NSW Origin representative played 166 NRL games since making his debut in 2011, including stints at Souths, Penrith, Gold Coast and Brisbane, scoring 77 tries along the way. CanberraJourneyman half Sam Williams hung up his boots in June after 107 NRL games across three stints at the Raiders and a four-game sojourn with St George Illawarra in 2014. NewcastleVeteran forward Sauaso Sue’s journeyman career may come to an end after stints at the Bulldogs and the Wests Tigers.

No one, least of all Dean Elgar, should have been surprised when Marnus Labuschagne nailed the non-striker’s stumps in the minutes before lunch on Boxing Day with the South African captain short of his ground. In fact, I’ll go further: he is the best fielder to play for Australia since prime Ricky Ponting prowled anywhere between cover and backward point throughout the 1990s and 2000s. To have two of these attributes usually makes for an excellent fielder, but to have the whole package is simply remarkable. Marnus Labuschagne get's the South African captain Elgar with a cracking runout! Still, since prime Ricky Ponting, Marnus Labuschagne is as good – or indeed, even better – as any Australian fielder.
