The rotation of the inner core is governed by the magnetic field generated in the liquid metal outer core, as well as the gravitational effects of the mantle. However, this new study suggests that the movement of the inner core is not as straightforward as previously thought. This means that the inner core is gradually turning back in the opposite direction. The strange motions of Earth’s core may seem far away from us, but their behavior influences life above the surface. The Earth’s core, specifically its outer core, influences the planet’s magnetic field.
