A video that said it was shot in Urumqi showed protesters chanting, “Remove the Communist Party! State-owned China Southern Airlines announced it would resume flights from Urumqi to four Chinese cities starting Monday. Two Urumqi residents who declined to be named for fear of retribution said large-scale protests occurred Friday night. The AP pinpointed the locations of two of the videos of the protests in different parts of Urumqi.

The Marshall Plan was a massive, US-funded spending project that helped rebuild Europe after the devastation of World War Two. US mulls air defences for UkraineThe United States is considering sending older HAWK air defence equipment to help Ukraine defend itself against Russian drone and cruise missile attacks, two officials told Reuters. Since Russia invaded Ukraine in February, the United States has sent around $17.6 billion (€17.7 billion) worth of security assistance to Kyiv. People walk on the rubble after a Russian missile hit a nearby block of apartments in Mykolaiv on Sunday. The UK is helping train Ukrainian soldiers before they fight Russian forces in Ukraine.

Asian shares rise on hopes of rate hike slowdown

Meanwhile, MSCI‘s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan was up 1%, led by a bounce in Hong Kong, while Japan’s Nikkei rose 1.1% by mid-morning. Three-year Australian government bond futures were knocked from peaks but managed to hold steady for the day at 96.400. Japanese government bonds rallied sharply after the Bank of Japan again said it would increase bond buying operations. Brent crude futures for December dropped $1.17, or 1.3%, to $92.35 a barrel at 0111 GMT, after climbing 26 cents in the previous session. U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures for December delivery were down 88 cents, or 1%, to $84.44 a barrel.

Bank of England to hike by 75 bps on Nov. 3 but may go bigger - Reuters poll

Annual price rises were expected to peak at 10.4% this quarter, the poll showed, before gradually declining, but won’t fall to target until at least 2025. The median forecast in the Oct. 18-25 poll showed the BoE would take Bank Rate up by 75 bps to 3.00% next week. But while that was a view held by 18 of 30 respondents, 10 expected 100 bps, one said 125 bps and one said 150. It was then expected to add another 75 bps in December and 50 bps next quarter before pausing, meaning rates would peak at 4.25% in the current cycle. Both the European Central Bank and the U.S. Federal Reserve are expected to deliver 75-bps increases at their next meetings.

Exxon's record-smashing Q3 profit nearly matches Apple's

Oil company profits have soared this year as rising demand and an under-supplied energy market collided with Western sanctions against Russia over its invasion of Ukraine. U.S. exports of gas and oil to Europe have jumped and promise to set all-time profit records for the industry. Investors this week pushed up Exxon shares to a record intraday high of $109.58 as oil prices traded above $96 per barrel. In the third quarter, U.S. natural gas prices averaged $7.95 per million British thermal units (mmBtu), up 10% from the second quarter.

Virgin Orbit: What went wrong with the UK's first satellite launch mission?

Monday night was supposed to be an historic moment for the UK's space industry - with the first orbital satellite launch from western Europe. But Virgin Orbit, the company behind the rocket carrying the payload of mixed-use satellites, said the rocket failed to reach its orbital target due to an "anomaly". If successful, it would have been the first orbital satellite launch from the UK - and western Europe. It was the first international launch for Virgin Orbit, the US-based company founded by British billionaire Richard Branson. Virgin Orbit said it ignited its engines, and quickly went hypersonic, successfully reaching space.

Hassan Bouchouf received fines on more than two dozen occasions, according to the town’s fine data. The Essonne police department didn’t respond to questions about the fines received by Assam and Bouchouf. After learning of the April 2020 fines, Assam verbally confronted Dumas on the street later that same month, according to both men and a witness. That prompted a review by the prosecutor’s office, which found that police had issued fines to Assam remotely, that person said. The watchdog is investigating about 10 complaints alleging improper police fines, mostly from Paris, according to a person familiar with the matter.

Job cuts announced by U.S.-based employers jumped 13% to 33,843 in October, the highest since February 2021, a report said. Meta Platforms Inc:The Facebook-parent plans to begin large-scale layoffs this week, in a move that will affect thousands of employees, the Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday. However, Bloomberg on Sunday reported Twitter was reaching out to dozens of employees who lost their jobs, asking them to return. Beyond Meat:Vegan meat maker Beyond Meat Inc said it plans to cut 200 jobs this year, with the layoffs expected to save about $39 million.
