UN envoy: Myanmar crisis taking 'catastrophic toll'

UNITED NATIONS: The United Nations' special envoy for Myanmar warned on Tuesday that the political, human rights and humanitarian crisis in the military-ruled Southeast Asian nation was deepening and taking "a catastrophic toll on the people." She said the meeting "was part of broader efforts by the UN to urgently support a return to civilian rule." She stressed that "there is a new political reality in Myanmar: a people demanding change, no longer willing to accept military rule." Much of the international community, including Myanmar's fellow members in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean), have expressed frustration at the hard line the generals have taken in resisting reform. Heyzer also said that although she had been working "extremely closely" with Asean officials, she was critical of its five-point consensus, which didn't deal with the Rohingya or how best to return Myanmar to civilian rule.

KYIV: Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has suggested he's open to peace talks with Russia, softening his refusal to negotiate with Moscow as long as its leader Vladimir Putin is in power while sticking to Kyiv's core demands. Zelenskyy's appeal to the international community to "force Russia into real peace talks" reflected a change in rhetoric. In late September, after Russia illegally annexed four Ukrainian regions, he signed a decree stating "the impossibility of holding talks" with Putin. He didn't specify how world leaders should coerce Russia into talks. Russia resumed calls for talks after it started losing ground to a Ukrainian counteroffensive in the east and the south in September.

The BUK missile had been identified through images and social media evidence as coming from the 53rd Anti-Aircraft Missile Brigade from Kursk in Russia, the court heard. The trial was held in the Netherlands as 196 of the victims were Dutch.

China economic slump to hamper Asia growth

BEIJING: China's "sharp and uncharacteristic" economic slowdown is expected to drag on growth across Asia through the end of next year, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) warned Friday, darkening an already gloomy global outlook. But growth in the region faces headwinds from a Chinese economy weighed down by a hardline zero-Covid policy and a crisis in the property sector, the organization said. The organization said it expects China's growth to rise to 4.4 percent and Asia's to increase to 4.3 percent next year, still "well below" the average of about 5.5 percent over the past two decades. China is the last major economy wedded to a zero-Covid policy, imposing snap lockdowns, mandatory testing, and lengthy quarantines in an effort to tamp down any outbreaks as they arise. Analysts still expect the country to fall well below its stated annual growth target of about 5.5 percent.
