Fury's latest win also paved the way for a unification bout with Oleksandr Usyk, the IBF, WBA and WBO heavyweight champion. "I'm saying Joe Joyce, a brilliant fighter, he deserves a title fight," Fury said. After the Whyte fight, Fury announced his retirement only for the lure of the ring to prove too strong.

Chinese President Xi Jinping flies in to the talks in Bangkok from a G20 meeting in Bali where US President Joe Biden pressed him to use his influence to rein in Pyongyang's activities. As Xi and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida prepared to meet, North Korea fired a short-range ballistic missile and warned Washington and its allies to expect a "fiercer" military response. Seoul and Washington have warned the North could be preparing to carry out a nuclear test—which would be its seventh. The G20 was upended by fears that a deadly missile strike on Poland signalled a dangerous escalation of Russia's war in Ukraine.

Bills ace Hamlin discharged from Cincinnati hospital

Hamlin was released from the University of Cincinnati Medical Center and flew to Buffalo where he will continue his recovery at another hospital. "We are thrilled and proud to share that Damar Hamlin has been released from the hospital and returned to Buffalo," UC Medical Center said. In separate posts on Twitter, Hamlin thanked medical staff in Cincinnati while paying tribute to the outpouring of goodwill across the sporting world. "Grateful for the awesome care I received at UCMC," Hamlin wrote, adding that staff at his new hospital, Buffalo General Medical Center, have "already made me feel at home!"

Rate hikes and tech optimism send stocks higher

Investor sentiment in the United States however was boosted by hopes that the Federal Reserve will soon end its cycle of interest rate hikes, after it unveiled a smaller increase amid progress on cooling inflation. Gains by equities in London, Frankfurt and Paris accelerated after the ECB and BoE each announced half-percentage-point rate hikes as anticipated. The ECB said another half-point increase would come in March, adding that it would "stay the course in raising interest rates significantly at a steady pace." Tech firms had led a surge on the Nasdaq and S&P 500 indices Wednesday after the US central bank unveiled a smaller interest rate increase. In Asia, the main equity indices closed mixed ahead of European rate decisions, with investors unable to maintain an early rally.
