Referring to the murder case of slain PPP leader Benazir Bhutto lodged with the Rawalpindi police under anti-terrorism charges, the expert said the government had assigned the probe to the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA). “The legal position of the previous JIT [formed on Jan 14] formed by the Punjab government is yet to be officially declared null and void,” the police expert added. The JIT formed on Jan 22 by the PDM government is fifth in the case. The first JIT was formed in November 2022 by the Punjab government with DIG Rustam Chohan its convener. But the after the formation of its own JIT by the federal government, the status of the JIT formed by the Punjab government remains in limbo.

SHC observes no relief work carried out in wake of floods in Sindh

From the side of additional advocate general, a report was filed which shows everything was okay while areas were dewatered and people were given relief work to their satisfaction. The bench said that a copy of this order be communicated to the office of the deputy attorney general, additional AG Sindh, auditor general and Sindh chief secretary for perusal and compliance. Petitioner Mumtaz Lashari Advocate, during the October 6 hearing had contended that no relief was provided to people in the affected areas across Sindh. His claim was contested by AAG Mohammad Ismail Bhutto, who submitted a report stating that relief operation was going on in the entire province. Both sides had proposed directions to sessions judges to arrange visits by civil judges/magistrates to the affected areas to collect facts and submit their reports regarding the dewatering and relief works.

US urges Russia to keep lines of communication open on Ukraine

WASHINGTON: US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin urged his Russian counterpart Sergei Shoigu on Friday to keep “lines of communication” open on the war in Ukraine, a spokesman said. “Secretary Austin emphasised the importance of maintaining lines of communication amid the ongoing war against Ukraine,” Brigadier General Pat Ryder said in a statement following their phone call. Russia also confirmed the call — the second between the two officials since Moscow invaded Ukraine on February 24. “We assess that ... CHITTAGONG: Twenty-four people died after a cyclone slammed into Bangladesh on Monday night, forcing the evacuation of about a million people from their homes. “Strong wind flipped the dredger and it sank instantly in the Bay of Bengal,” he said, adding that divers were searching for survivors. People evacuated from low-lying regions such as remote islands and river banks were moved to thousands of multi-storey cyclone shelters. Panic and snakesThe cyclone downed trees and brought widespread panic to the southern island of Maheshkhali after power and telecoms were cut. Cyclone Amphan, the second “super cyclone” recorded over the Bay of Bengal, killed more than 100 people in Bangladesh and India and affected millions when it hit in 2020.
