Study investigates spread of Klebsiella superbug between humans and the environment

Klebsiella pneumoniae is the most well-known species in this family, which can cause pneumonia, meningitis, urinary tract infections and infections in the bloodstream. Klebsiella has overtaken MRSA as a health problem in the UK, with rates steadily increasing. From this, they found 3,482 isolates including 15 different species of Klebsiella, with half of the positive samples containing K. pneumoniae. Our research did not give any evidence of this, however, we did find resistant klebsiella in pets, such as cats and dogs. "Next we want to track how plasmids are transferred between strains, using a technique called long read sequencing."

Generative AI approach unlocks path to accelerated antibody drug creation for novel therapeutic targets

Application of the generative AI method to design de novo antibodies in a zero-shot and controllable fashion could significantly reduce the production time of therapeutic antibody development. About the studyA recent study, posted in the bioRxiv* preprint server, used generative AI models to develop de novo design antibodies against three distinct targets in a zero-shot fashion. This strategy can be used for more sophisticated antibody development of higher therapeutic relevance, containing specific epitope targeting sites. It is an important step toward future de novo antibody design with comparable or greater binding and natural sequence characteristics. Future outlookThis generative design could be further advanced in the future to enable the de novo design of all CDRs and framework regions.

Study identifies new tau regulators as viable therapeutic targets for Alzheimer's and other tauopathies

Tauopathies such as Alzheimer's disease are a class of neurodegenerative disorders involving a pathological accumulation of tau proteins which eventually results in massive loss of brain cells. A recent study by researchers at Texas Children's Hospital and Baylor College of Medicine has now identified new tau regulators that can serve as viable and effective therapeutic targets for Alzheimer's disease and other tauopathies. Next, we used a cross-species approach involving mammalian cells and fruit flies to 'comb' through this large collection to find genes that impact tau levels." They also found that RNF130 and RNF149 decrease the levels of the tau degrader (CHIP) and that their inhibition increases CHIP which in turn decreases tau levels. This discovery opens the exciting possibility of leveraging small-molecule inhibitors to lower tau levels and hopefully, prevent memory deficits in those at risk for Alzheimer's disease and other tauopathies."

Study significanceThe current study describes a novel mechanism of SADS-C-V-induced autophagy, which is needed for viral replication and survival inside host cells. Moreover, the study identifies ITGA3 as a potential antiviral molecule that can prevent viral replication by inhibiting autophagy.

Currently available pacemakers work by implanting one or two leads, or points of contact, into the heart with hooks or screws. This precision will not only reduce pain for pacemaker patients by bypassing the heart's pain receptors, it will also allow the pacemaker to respond to different kinds of irregularities in more appropriate ways. "This technology could make life easier for patients all over the world, while also helping scientists and physicians learn more about how to monitor and treat the disease." Additionally, the device does not require a battery, which could save pacemaker patients from needing to replace the battery in their device every five to seven years, as is currently the norm.

Long COVID, a new clinical entity constantly evolving

Study: Long COVID: An inevitable sequela of SARS-CoV-2 infection. One study observed that the prevalence of long COVID among children and adolescents was 25.24%, whereas the rate of long COVID was 29.19% for hospitalized patients. One meta-analysis observed anxiety and depression in 22% and 23% of long COVID patients, respectively. Based on currently available information, long COVID could develop in all COVID-19 patients, although severe patients are at an increased risk. Furthermore, long COVID could present with heterogeneous clinical manifestations, with vaccination potentially being the only way to avert long COVID.
