It’s not as if Martin Luther King Jr. needs another public monument. On Friday, at the Boston Common, Dr. King and wife Coretta Scott King were honoured with a new 20x32-foot bronze sculpture. Thomas wanted to create a symbolic representation of “unity” and “love” to transcend “singular hero worship.” But Dr. King was singularly heroic. Similarly, despite her grief, Coretta Scott King kept fighting for a better world. Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King were two souls for the ages.

US says Chinese intercept could have caused air collision

BEIJING (AP) — The U.S. military says a Chinese fighter jet flew dangerously close to an Air Force plane over the South China Sea, forcing the American pilot to maneuver to avoid a collision. The U.S. plane was “lawfully conducting routine operations over the South China Sea in international airspace,” the statement said. Such behavior led to a 2001 in-air collision in which a Chinese plane was lost and pilot killed. China deeply resents the presence of U.S. military assets in the South China Sea and regularly demands its ships and planes leave the area. The U.S. says it is fully entitled to operate in and over the South China Sea and ignores the Chinese demands.

Category 4 Rosyln brushing Vallarta on way to Mexico coast

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Hurricane Roslyn plowed over the Pacific as a powerful Category 4 storm just offshore from the Mexican resort of Puerto Vallarta while heading for a Sunday landfall a little to the north. Roslyn’s core was about 65 miles (105 kilometers) west-southwest of Cabo Corrientes — the point of land jutting into the Pacific south of Puerto Vallarta — and moving north at 12 mph (19 kph). Seemingly oblivious to the approaching storm, tourists ate at beachside eateries Saturday around Puerto Vallarta and smaller resorts farther north on the Nayarit coast where the storm likely was headed. Everything is calm, it’s all normal,” said Jaime Cantón, a receptionist at the Casa Maria hotel in Puerto Vallarta. Enrique Alfaro wrote that 270 people had been evacuated in a town near the hurricane’s expected path and that five emergency shelters had been set up in Puerto Vallarta.

Mayor John Tory is raising red flags about Premier Doug Ford’s housing plan, warning it could cost the cash-strapped city hundreds of millions of dollars in forgone development charges. The province has set a goal of building 1.5 million new homes by 2032, almost one-fifth of them in Toronto. He argued that if the province wants to reduce development charges, it should compensate the city financially. Development charges are one of the main sources of revenue for Ontario municipalities. Toronto has budgeted more than $540 million from development charges to fund its 10-year capital plan.
